The tides have been very high at night for the last several days. The day after the full moon we checked the tide levels using this primitive tide gauge: powdered cork in a clear plastic tube. In the photo you can see the “bath tub ring” of cork in the middle of the tube. This mark shows that the water was about 2.5 feet above the top of the marsh. As predicted, the majority of our willet nests didn’t make it through the floods. The good news is that some nests hatched just before the floods, and the willet parents have done a fine job of keeping their broods alive through all of the wet times.
